The two predominant ethnicities in the district are the Iteso and the Kumam. The main languages spoken in the district are Ateso, Kumam, and Swahili.
The Soroti Rock is an identity of Soroti, dominating the town and offers spectacular views of the Lake Cayuga and the entire town. This magnificent granite formation can be climbed up to have the beauty of amazing scenery.

Formerly known as Teso District, it existed at Independence in 1962 and consists of the present day Kaberamaido, Katakwi, Soroti and Kumi. To ease administration, Teso district was in the 1970s divided into North Teso and South Teso, which in 1980, became Soroti and Kumi District respectively.
In June 2015, the government of Uganda, officially created Soroti University as a public institution, when the minister of Education, Science and Technology and Sports, Jessica Alupo, introduced a Statutory Instrument followed by a resolution of Parliament to the same effect.
Soroti Town is located in Eastern Uganda approximately 112 kilometres by road, northwest of the city of Mbale, on the highway between Mbale and Lira.
